100 Mile Appalachian Trail Backpack – Daleville VA to the Tye River

We tried to do this 100 mile backpack at the end of Sept – beginning of Oct 2010. Due to torrential rains and some feet problems we were only able to do 80 miles and stopped at Route 60. We went back a few weeks later to finish that last 25 miles from Route 60 over to Route 56 at the Tye River.

We crossed a beautiful cow pasture a few miles into the hike near Troutville, VA.

The nicest shelter we stayed at was the Bryant Ridge Shelter, sleeps about 20 people.

We had a beautiful view from Big Rocky Row looking down on the James River, one of the rare days it wasn’t raining.

One night we were stuck at the Thunder Hill Shelter in a pouring rain banging down all night on a new metal roof, not much sleep that night.

When we went back a few weeks later we had some great views on Cold Mountain, Tar Jacket Ridge, Spy Rock and The Priest.
